Great burgers. Try the Cajun fries!

I'm not sure if you have heard about this, but this Five Guys was actually robbed at gunpoint in its first week open. The best part was, it was an inside job. Allow me to explain. On June 30th, 2011 this amazing headline graced the streets of White Plains newspapers: "FOUR GUYS AND A GIRL ROB FIVE GUYS". What happened was, three men entered the Five Guys at midnight demanding all of the money. They presented their loaded revolver to "convince" the staff to give them the money. Once the three left with $37,000, the police were notified and the White Plains Police Department caught the fleeing men in THREE MINUTES. As it turns out, the woman working at the Five Guys was also in on the robbery. And a fifth member of their team organized it. As her information was readily available from employment records, they were all rounded up instantly. They could literally make a movie about this. ANYWAYS, I LOVE THIS FIVE GUYS! Robbery aside, the location is a godsend. Westchester has like three Five Guys, so getting one in White Plains that is close-ish to my hometown of Irvington is extremely exciting. This Five Guys, like a few, has a cork board where kids and adults alike can make drawings for the place and put them on the wall. I've penned a few myself. It gives it a local, wholesome flair. The actual orders take longer than most Five Guys. You could be waiting for your burger for quite a while, but the free peanuts make up for this! Free refills, too! Parking is in the huge garage right next to it so it's very convenient! There is ample seating so you usually don't have to worry about getting a table. And the employees are pretty efficient. This Five Guys is one of a few in the chain who have started measuring their fry portions more accurately. You might be used to your bag being filled to the brim with an unrealistic amount of french fries. That's classic Five Guys. But this place actually measures the portion they give you. Still plenty!!! I love you Five Guys. And I'm sorry you were robbed. I wish I could be the Sixth Guy. Six Guys. I like it.

After giving it some thought, I decided I can't penalize this burger joint for ONLY having great burgers with nothing else to offer. If you're in the White Plains area, I would recommend you to check out Five Guys. But there are a few things that could use some improvement... 1. The wait is long, so if you want to run over there on your lunch break, you may want to give it a second thought. 2. I believe they use peanut oil so if you have a peanut allergy this place isn't for you. 3. They serve peanuts as an appetizer. I'm not really sure how this is associated with a burger. I understand Five Guys doesn't want to be like every other burger joint but where are the milk shakes? Side dishes? Don't feed me small animal food. The cajun fries are tasteless and a waste of money in my eyes. You can pass it up. So like I said, I'm rating Five Guys 4 stars for their juicy burgers and endless topping selections-Nothing else.

I don't know why I keep coming back here but I do. The burgers are pretty good--but I think moreso buoyed by all the press clippings plastering their walls than the actual taste. (Being that there are about four burger-dedicated places in the neighborhood, there's a lot to compare it to.) I would probably come here more if the wait wasn't so maddening. This place is, in no uncertain terms, fast food--since you have to wait in line and order at a counter. Given that, it's pretty frustrating to wait a long time watching the cooks grill burgers in what seems a proprietary, very slow, assembly line process. There has to be a better way than how they do it at this place. Typically, my experience here is this: Order & pay, then stand in the pickup area with your number for about 10 min. while you watch every step of your burger's cooking come to a HALT as it sits on the counter for someone to read your receipt among many. Then more waiting as they top your burger, confirm it a million times, then dump it off at the fries section where your order once again sits there until someone feels like pouring some fries in the bag. Then you're staring at your finished order, in bag, while everyone else scurries around until finally someone sees it and calls out your number. I would definitely trade the "made to order" benefit for at least something faster. I mean, come on...if there are 20 people in the register line, and you know 80% of them are ordering burgers, why wait until they order to put a patty on the grill? I also still can't understand why in the world anyone can have a burger joint that doesn't serve shakes. Don't even get me started on that...

Have never been disappointed but have realized its easier to down load the app and order on the way over so you don't have to wait on the sometimes long lines.

Fast food that's not as bad as regular fast food. The burgers are good and you can get almost anything on em. The bacon cheese dogs are pretty boss and a bag of fries doesn't hurt either (lol, except my cholesterol).

  • Ari H.

Dear 5 guys, Lose the peanuts and spend the money on shakes. What kind of burger joint doesn't have shakes? That MAJOR gripe aside, the burgers themselves are pretty good. I know a lot of West Coasters compare it to In n' Out, and while it may be the closest thing we have here on the East Coast, it is a VERY generous comparison. The burgers are better than Burger King, but let's leave it at that. The one thing I will give 5 guys is that their fries are light years better than In n' Out fries- which taste like cardboard.

Five Guys has always been one of my very favorite places to grab a quick burger. The service here is incredibly friendly and it pretty much lives up to what you expect from Five Guys. They probably get a lot more busy than other locations and so it might cause some problems but I still didn't mind at all. Still one of my go-to places when I want a nice solid standard American burger and some of the best fries anywhere. Oh and there's like 16 choices for drinks (maybe more) but that makes me smile even if I don't drink most of them. Lots of diet options besides water and diet coke. That's a plus.

    (3)
  • Paul B.

Today was the first time I went to one of these chains and the question is, "what was all the hype about?" Average burger that was slightly undercooked, probably due to the fact it was extremely busy. Prices are not that reasonable and the place was a mess.

  • Joe N.

Really nothing Special, but to be fair I had it as take out, did not walk in the place at all. Dbl cheeseburger with everything tasted like burger king in my opinion, hot dog was fine, but they don't even have sauerkraut?? French fries were disgusting.

Ordered veggie sandwich and Cajun fries. Wait time depends on the crowd. I waited for 10 mins. However I enjoyed those 10 mins with complementary nuts. Once your order is ready they shout for your number . Because of crowd noise one can miss that easily so it's better to stand and wait near pick up counter. My veggie sandwich was okay. Vegetarian don't have much options near by so I won't complain . I ordered little fries but the quantity I got was sufficient for two grown ups easily. Taste was ok. Not that crispy though . But still Was good .

  • Deborah F.

Yes, they have free peanuts. But I would have rather had a pleasant person taking my order at the counter. I was the only person in line but I had the impression she was annoyed that I did not rapidly fire my order to her off the top of my head. This was my first visit and I am not in a hurry to go back. The fries were hot - that was the best thing about them. I guess people like them throwing more in the bottom of your bag (not my thing.) The burger was okay. I might have liked everything better if I had been greeted with more than a bad attitude.

  • D C.

I always have a very good experience at this 5 guys location, unlike some other ones. The employees are very friendly and don't rush you when ordering. The burgers are always on point and the fries are great as well. It's my go to whenever I'm in the area.

  • Blue R.

5 guys is a great concept the burgers are juicy and fresh and they give you a ton of fries but everything is al a cart, no combo meals here and they only offer American cheese n their burgers I prefer cheddar cheese or Swiss chasse on my cheeseburgers. Not cheap.. nt expensive so 3 stars from me..

    (3)
  • Gregorious F.

I'm first time in five guys. They don't have picture menu like others. We have to order it by looking at the list on the board. I ordered a combo cheese hamburger. It's cost around 14 bucks. That's a lot of money for a hamburger. The fries is good for 3 people. If anyone is going there with 3 people don't buy 3 orders of fries but one. It's a lot. Hamburger was good and juicy. Luv it.

  • Hillary M.

Not vegetarian friendly. No veggie burgers :( I was curious to try the "veggie sandwich" which turned out to be a few pickles and cheese on a burger bun... Ew. The fries aren't bad, neither are the free peanuts.

  • Danny C.

Five Guys has a small, basic menu. Don't let that worry, the food is incredible. Portions are gigantic, and free refills. Every establishment should be as generous. Even the small fries can be split for too.

We finally tried this Five Guys out even though it's a fair drive from the office. The burgers are pretty standard and are on par with other Five Guys. A juicy (re: greasy) cheesy double patty with bacon. If you read my other review of the Five Guys at Dulles airport, they charge $6.59 for the same burger we get in Queens for $7.19. Here, it's $7.49, outrageous! The only good thing going for them are the free toppings. Now here's another reason I only gave them 2 stars and probably not going back again. You know Five Guys' practice to dump a scoop of fries into your bag whether you ordered a small or large? They do it at every Five Guys except here! No matter which one we've been to in Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Connecticut or DC, we always get the bonus fries. So when I open my bag and the small cup is not even full, I'm PO'ed! This place was a serious disappointment and is a blotch on the Five Guys name.

  • Thomas A.

Solid chain store burger joint. Greasy juicy burger and gotta love the free toppings. The free roasted peanuts are always a bonus and the fries are greasy as well. However there are better burgers out there that are less greasy, but still this place is a solid location. Like another reviewer, I did notice the fries aren't as abundant as other locations.

    (3)
  • Kammy Ny N.

Fresh and juicy burger. Fries are very good. Free peanuts ! Two little bacon cheese burger + Hamburger+Large fries $29 in total. A little pricy for a fast food chain but for a gourmet burger shop it's decent price.

  • Cal C.

Good burger choices. I had the bacon burger with jalapenos, onions, LT, and ketchup. They need to remove bags of potatos or peanuts to clear up space for tables or customers. They should make the pick up/waiting area bigger so people are not standing next to customers who are sitting. A bullhorn or speaker system would be useful so workers don't have to scream 2-3X per order. It is an alternative to Mickey Dees and Burger Death. If you want to move up on price and quality, Bare Burger worth a shot. I need to come back before comparing it to SmashBurger. I happen to really like Smashburger.

Five guys restaurant best burger in town! What I love about this restaurant is that they show you how they prepare it, why you wait you see everything happening in front of you. As you sit and wait you can check out the five diner type quality from the 1950s that it has,With their red and white tiles matching chairs and tables is pretty cool. I also like the roasted peanuts while you wait for your order. I have tried several five guys restaurants and they all have the same quality, Unity and hospitality what else can a client ask for. I know more catchup please!! LoL

  • Jessica B.

The burgers are always great and the Cajun fries are to die for, but the reason for my low rating is the staff, well more specifically, one female in particular. The first time I encountered her, I thought nothing of it, maybe she was just having a bad day. I came in another day and there was no line. There were 2 females behind the counter with their backs to the door, one of them was her. I said hi and neither of them acknowledged me. I'm mean I'm not expecting excellent customer service, but a simple greeting and a smile would go a long way. While taking my order she was rolling her eyes and just made it seem like I was bothering her. While they were making my food, they were gossiping about co-workers calling out because of hangovers and just talking about things that customers don't need to hear. Just by experiencing her bad attitude twice, makes me think twice about going back. And it's a shame because the food is awesome!

  • Neelam P.

I loved the cajun fries... they are served hot with a lot of spices! Since I'm a vegetarian there were only a few options for me so I decided to go w/the grilled cheese...it was so tiny and disappointing. I've had better at random delis in the city....but I guess most people don't come here for the grilled cheese. Had to wait a while the night I went because the line was so huge. Loved the complimentary peanuts while you wait.

Best burgers for a fast food place in the area. Always served fresh and the fries are amazing. Cheap prices, free refills and peanuts. What more could you want?! They need more seating, place gets packed!

I generally like Five Guys burgers...but something truly awful is happening at this location. A friend and I went today (first time at this location) and we were both totally totally disappointed at the burger and fries they served. We both agreed that hands down these were the worst burgers we've ever had at any Five Guys..absolute worst. Felt like we were served cold mushed buns, cold burgers and below grade fries. This visit has made us question having Five Guys again. Made even worse because just last week I was enjoying an In N Out Burger in California. It's highly likely that it'll be a very long time before having another Five Guys burger based on this low grade food quality experience. Has made the list for 2nd worst burger this year, behind 40 North in Hastings on Hudson.

I remember the first time i had five guys down in DC. The burgers and fries were fresh and delicious, and the gimmicks (free peanuts, the fries served in a paper bag, writing on the wall, etc.) were a hoot. I don't know if I changed or they changed, but the food really doesn't have the same pizazz any more. It's definitely a decent feed, but in my opinion, not the best burgers out there. And the gimmicks which are replicated at every branch, feel stale and silly. A good spot if you crave a big fat burger, but it's best to keep your expectations on the ground.

I ususally get the hot dogs here which are kosher and I find them juicy! I get relish, raw onion and mustard. I also like the Cajun fries but I don't love them. It's all about the crispness and I like mine mildly crispy and 5guys prepares them a bit more crispier than I like but the spice is good. I have had burgers from here as well. They are good! Juicy, made to order, not to thick. I'm not exactly a burger girl but I definitely like them. I think my favorite thing here is the fact they toast their buns. Not many places do that and to me, that makes my dog. I also like the fact everything is made to order, no food sitting around under hot lights. So I think as far as fast food goes, this place is very good. Ohhhhh and I like the free shelled peanuts! I think that's a cute gimmick! They also have gold peak iced tea, which is really good, tastes natural. The place is kept clean and they staff is friendly! Hey the music isn't bad either!

  • Maddie B.

FIVE GUYS FINALLY LEARNS HOW TO MAKE FRENCH FRIES!!! I don't know how it happened, but they have leaned that to be crispy, fries must be double cooked. Even though the fries are still too greasy and salty, at least there's some crisp! Good goin, Five Guys. The little burgers are good enough, better than McDonald's. I still think the toppings are badly done -- onions are unevenly chopped, not sliced. They should add shakes and onion rings.

  • Mike A.

Not sure what the hype is regarding Five Guys in general. The burgers are ok, and the restaurant is messy. Somehow you are provided with free peanuts (I didn't have any on my table), and there are peanut shells all over the floor. There doesn't seem to be anyone assigned to cleaning tables or sweeping the floor. For an assembly line hamburger place, my burger took at least 20 minutes. If you don't hear them call out your number, your bag goes up on a shelf and sits. Smashburger is much better with cleaner restaurants and better trained staff, and is a much more civilized place to eat.

After seeing this place many times and seeing all the praises they posted about themselves from various outlets on the window, we finally went in. The first thing to know is the menu which can be confusing. I thought "Little" hamburger/cheeseburger meant the kids menu. It was long after I ordered that I overheard another table talking about how "little" meant single patty and the non-little(?) meant double patty. This place is just like a Subway. You can add all kinds of vegetables to your burger with a penalty. The penalty isn't monetary it is a handling penalty. You cannot keep your burger from falling apart should you order too much (just like a Subway sandwich). The fries were soggy and cold. They put some of the fries in a paper bag and some of the fries in a cup. It is not just a couple of fries in the bag it is a second cup full. I wonder why they bother with the cup at all. The cup traps all the heat and makes the fries soggy. The burger itself tastes fine. It is nothing special but nothing to complain about since I did not order a lot of vegetables but watched a few people's burgers fall apart. The free peanuts is nice (unless you are allergic). We were wondering what was to stop someone from filling their bag with peanuts then leaving. Our question was answered when someone did just that. The guy dropped the bag on the floor but caught it before it could tip over and spill the peanuts all over the place. Overall, this is a standard fast food place.

  • Sam M.

I tried Five Guys for the first time today after hearing all the hype about it, and nothing lived up to my expectations. The burger was too greasy and flavorless, and the fries were soggy. If you want a good fast-food type burger go somewhere else and I'm sure you'll be able to find something much better anywhere but here.

Had Five Guys this weekend and I always like coming here right after the movies across the way in City Center. The staff are pleasant and the burgers are great. I'm not one for the roasted beans that lay out around the place that other devour. Just not me. But it adds a nice touch to the place. Free refills on the soft drinks if you eat in. I've seen plenty of people going on in the reviews about the burgers being expensive. I don't think they are all that expensive. Maybe their just cheapskates? IDK. I think that with the amount of fries they stuff in your bag even when ordering a small fries, you get way more than you would at McD's which isn't good for you anyways with all those chemicals. At least these are real burgers.

    (4)
  • Steve T.

I like this place. Burger's a fantastic but why is it so expensive! I mean, can't they make the fries and drink come with the burgers instead of paying a separate price for both of them? Its absolutely ridiculous. Please owners take note of this review. Make the fries and drink come with the burger for one price.

    (3)
  • Michael C.

I've ordered here a few times and have been debating this rating for awhile. When I watch them cook the burgers I always see them pressing em down. Burgers are kinda flavorless as a result imo. I love the Cajun fries, big fan of spicy, little extra salt helps. I'm not going to say I won't come here again out of convenience, but they are a little pricey. Better burger places out there in the big burger world that give you more and better options.

    (2)
  • Paul D.

It's obvious that a lot of people line up to eat at Five Guys because they like their burgers. I'm not one of them. The burger patties remind me of McDonald's Big Mac, and there's nothing special about them. I gave them another try, and added jalapenos to the "everything" request. Even with grilled mushrooms and onions, the burger was really bland. And the fries? Tastes like cardboard. $5 for a burger is asking a lot, too. In N Out still rules, by far.

    (1)
  • Rachel J.

So, I'm not going to lie...I tried Five Guys because of the "oh my dayum" YouTube song. The burgers are okay - on par with Shake Shack. Additionally, the burger quality is really dependent on which location you visit; I've had good burgers at some locations and greasy messes at others.

    (3)
  • Peter K.

To be fair though, I actually didn't have their burger, just their fries...But, for the price I paid for my fries and my friend's burger, this place didn't stack up. I ordered the Cajun fries, which tasted ok, and my friend seemed to like his everything burger. BUT, for $18 and change, for one burger and fries and a 2 large drinks, I expect good fries and a great burger. I'll try this place one more time since I frequent this area, but so far, I'm disappointed

    (2)
  • QueenDee D.

I have to admit, all the times I've been in the area, I just thought paying $5 for a burger was overkill, but when hunger takes over, all bets are off the table. I gave in to desire. The cheeseburger was good (but I WAS ravished). I wasn't sure what kind of fries to get (regular or cajun), so the guy offered a sample of cajun. Well his sample was a "cup" of fries. By the time I ate the sample, I ready to cancel my order of fries. LOL They simply sprinkled the fries with cayenne pepper, but they were tasty. All in all, I will revisit again if needed.

  • Gene C.

Well, It was worth the wait first for the place to open and then almost about a week to even get inside! Great hamburgers with tons of toppings! Honestly they are making a really good burger with lots of flavor and the fries are thick and tasty as well. ...and! the free peanuts in their shells are an added bonus while your waiting for your order to be ready!, plus the place is spotless and really nice to look at. This is white White Plains really needs, a quick burger place at great prices and with a great staff taking care of things! ... it also is a plus to be right across from my office but not everyone can have that added on the list. Give it a try, Gene

Finally, a real burger joint in town. Ok, ok. Westchester Burger company is also pretty durn good but Five Guys delivers consistently... and a consistent wait can also be expected.
